When the BSG Rennsteig Masserberg bidded for hosting the GDR junior championships of 1973, the smaller K25-Hartungschanze was complained about and instead it was recommended to build a new ski jump at the opposite slope of the valley. This was the birth of Rehtalschanze, which was built within a year and completed by fall of 1972. One year later it was covered with plastic mattings, just like the newly added 10-meter mini hill.
Rehtalschanze was strongly frequented and thus subjected to wear, which made it unusable for competitons by 1987. In 1988, the construction of a new inrun tower on own account had started, but it was never completed since the financial effort could not be borne. With the German reunification in 1990 the GDR sports system dissolved on all levels. State funding was cut down, which also affected Masserberg.
The re-construction of the ski jump came to a halt. As an alternative, in early 1990 it was intended to build a new, cheaper ski jump above the football field, but Sportgemeinschaft Rennsteig Masserberg could not finance that either. Thus, in 1997, the ski jumping and Nordic combined sections of SG Rennsteig Masserberg had to be closed. Since then, only cross-country skiing is still part of the nordic section.
