History:

The first ski jumping hill at Masserberg was inaugurated in 1924. Person in charge was Louis Hartung, a forest ranger passionate about ski sports, who had substantially influenced the development of the up-coming winter sports destination in Thuringia and also acted as chairman of WSV Masserberg until 1945.
In 1950, the new-construction of the out-dated ski jump at Sommerwand started in order to host the district championships of Hildburghausen in the coming winter. At that time, it was the only operating ski jump in the district that allowed jumps over 40 meters. Besides regional competitions and the traditional New Year's Eve and Carnival competitionsduring 1950s, also several district championships of Rostock were held there.
In 1961, a K25 junior hill with natural inrun was constructed beside large Hartung-Schanze. In 1962, the reconstruction of the ski jumping facility according to plans by engineer D. Schmidt, who what also planned the large hill at Kanzlersgrund in Oberhof, started. Due to the tough shale, works turned out to be very difficult for PGH Rennsteig Masserberg and thus they lasted over two years. In 1965, the new ski jump with its massive inrun tower, inrun track on a concrete foundation and enlarged landing slope was officially inaugurated as "Hartungschanze".
When the ski club bidded for hosting the GDR junior championships of 1973, the smaller K25 ski jump, which had been covered with plastic mattings in 1966, was complained about and instead it was recommended to build a new ski jump at the opposite slope of the valley. This was the birth of Rehtalschanze, which was completed by fall of 1972.
The old Hartungschanzen were given up and dilapidated over the years, since now Rehtalschanzen were used. With the German reunification in 1990 the sports system of GDR dissolved. In 1997, the ski jumping and Nordic combined sections of SG Rennsteig Masserberg had to be closed.

In Masserberg gab es noch die große Hartung-Schanze (ca. K 55) und die mit Matten belegte Rehtalschanze (K 25)
