History:

Since 1932, people have been ski jumping on Bunker Hill in Dubuque. Also in Longview, in the north of Dubuque, along the Peru Road, there was another ski jump, which was enlarged in 1940 with an approx. 23-meter high inrun tower. The opening took place on 3./4. February 1940, with Steve Egeness setting the hill record with 142 feet (43.3 m) on the second day.
In 1941/42 the inrun tower was raised again by 11 meters so that the jump now had a total height of almost 90 meters. In addition, the take-off and landing slope were improved. 15,000 spectators were expected for the opening competition on February 15th, 1942, which was also broadcasted live on the radio. In 1948, a hill record of 192 feet was set.
In 1948/49 the hill was enlarged again to enable jumps over 65 meters. The best American and some European top jumpers took part in the opening competition on January 23, 1949, including the reigning Olympic champion from 1948 Petter Hugsted. Presumably, the ski jumping activities then ended in the 1950s.
