History:

The Swiss immigrant Ernie Keller founded Dubuque Ski Club in 1931. In 1932, a ski jumping hill was built along Kaufmann Avenue near Bunker Hill through a Works Progress Administration project. In March 1932, Keller jumped a hill record of 62 feet (18.9 m) and it was expected that jumps up to 80 feet could be possible. The first proper competition at Bunker Hill in Dubuque was held on February 7, 1934. Annual tournaments continued with participants from neighboring ski clubs and states. After an improvement of the hill, Steve Egeness soared to 77 feet in 1938 and beat the existing record of 72 feet, set by Keller in 1935.
In 1940, a new, larger ski jumping hill was opened at Longview, but activities at Kaufmann Avenue still continued. The ski jump was equipped with floodlights and in 1952, a rope tow was installed there. The ski jumping hill was probably given up during 1950s.
