At Ogden Dunes on Lake Michigan in 1927 the construction of a ski jumping hill on a sand dune had started. It was opened on January 22, 1928 and till 1932 a large annual ski jumping competition was hosted, to which up to 20,000 spectators came. At these five ski jumping event many ski jumping heroes of this époque were taking part, just as for example Henry Hall, Sigmund and Birger Ruud, Reidar Andersen and Anders Haugen.
Already three years later the giant steel-made jump, of which the take-off length and height was adjustable, was dismantled after the trials for 1936 Winter Games and transported to Rockford, Illinois, since Ogden Dunes Ski Club was in financial difficulties due to the Great Depression.
