History:

In fall 1907 and early winter 1908, the large Rauchloch-Schanze was built at Rauchloch, located between Winterberg and Neuastenberg. The location opposite Kahler Asten was chosen according to a reference from a famous skier of the age, since it was snow-secure, protected from wind, and just beneath the road. The competitions on Rauchlochschanze were among the most popular sports events at that time and attracted spectators from Westphalia and Rhineland. A newspaper reported significant dangers of the ski jump on February 15, 1926. The outrun was dangerous, "after a good jump, the jumpers let themselves fall down to the ground, just to avoid sliding into a water stream. That is definitely a distortion." With the conversion in 1931, the safety in the outrun was enhanced, and the size of the ski jump was increased. Now, it allowed distances up to 45 meters.
After World War II, a commandant of the British occupiers requested the restoration of the ski jumping hill. Since Rauchlochschanze was located remotely and St.-Georg-Schanze in Winterberg was also enlarged in 1947-48, it was abandoned in 1949. Furthermore, in Neuastenberg a new ski jump was built at Postwiese.
Meanwhile, nature reoccupied the area of the former ski jump. Except for the take-off, the forest aisle of the inrun, and the foundations of the inrun tower, nothing is visible anymore.
