History:

Skiclub Andermatt was founded on December 13, 1903 and on new year's eve 1905 the first official competition was hosted, which meant at that time a cross-country run, ski jumping, and alpine skiing. It took place on the ski jumping hill at Urseren/Gurschen forest, next to Grand-Hotel Danioth, and Leif Berg from Norway jumped a record distance of 34 meters. In 1909, the "5th Great Ski Race of Switzerland", the Swiss Championships in these days, were staged at Andermatt.
Planning for the construction of large Gotthardschanze already started in 1925 and finally, the 70 meter hill was inaugurated on December 27, 1931. Annual ski jumping competitions took place there depending on the winter conditions and, of course, also Swiss Championships in ski jumping and Nordic Combined. In 1934, the Norwegian World Class jumper Birger Ruud landed a hill record of 66 m, which had only been beaten by Jean Amnes (Norway) and the Switzerland’s Andreas Däscher with leaps on 69 m in 1952. In 1934 und 1953 Swiss Championships were staged on Gotthardschanze. When the Russian ski jumping national team was preparing and having qualifying competitions short before the Olympics of 1956, a few times more than 70 m were reached.
Parts of the jump and the judges tower were destroyed by avalanches in 1945, 1951 and 1952, but always reconstructed. But wind at the jump was always were problematic. The first official competition was held in 1966 as a Swiss Championship. In 1970 the last hour came near for the Gotthardschanze. The takeoff was removed and since only the landing hill has stayed as a witness of the former ski jumping hill of Andermatt.
