As early as 1909, the Chemnitz ski club built a ski jump on Geiersberg, between Eibenberg and Kemtau in what is today the municipality of Burkhardtsdorf. The wooden hill allowed jumps of up to 20 meters and served Hans Edler von der Planitz, one of the best ski jumpers in Central Europe at the time, as a training hill. In the mid-1920s, however, the ski jump no longer met the highest demands, and thus the Chemnitz ski jumpers moved on to Erfenschlag. In Kemtau, instead, the Turnerschanze was built by the ATSB in 1932 and was used until World War II.
At the beginning of the 1950s, the Geiersberg was reforested as part of the national construction work (NAW) and the Geiersbergschanze was rebuilt. Starting in 1952-53, there was jumping again and in 1955 the first winter sports festival of the Karl-Marx-Stadt/Land district was held. A fatal accident of a 17-year-old from Neu-Eibenberg ended the history of jumping on the Geiersberg around 1960.
