History:
In 1905 an artist performed at the U.S. American circus Bailey whose performance was to act like a ski jumper in the arena. At that time this extraordinary sport was called “ski sailing”. The guy who did that was no one else than the man who won the ski jumping competition at Holmenkollen two years before, named Karl Howelsen, being a Norwegian immigrant and settling at Steamboat Springs some years later.
Being situated in the central Rocky Mountains, Steamboat Springs with its alpine downhill courses, cross-country trails and ski jumps - the oldest still used ones in the whole US - is now one of the leading winter sports ressorts in Colorado. Since 1914 the “Winter Carnival” has taken place every year with different competitions and is a synonym of the long-lasting tradition.
While the first Steamboat Springs Winter Carnival in February 1914 still took place on a small ski jumping site at Woodchuck Hill, Carl Howelsen then built a larger ski jumping hill at Elk Park during 1914. The ski jump, from 1917 on called Howelsen Hill, was inaugurated with the 1915 Winter Carnival and should allow record-breaking jumps. Furthermore, in 1915 the Steamboat Winter Sports Club was founded. With a jump on 192 feet (58.5 m) Ragnar Omtvedt fulfilled Howelsen's dream in 1916 - it was a new world record! In the following year, Henry Hall even improved the world record on Howelsen Hill to 203 feet (61.9 m). Lars and Anders Haugan reached world record distances as well, but could not land their jumps.
In 1931 the ski jump was enlarged, however, not allowing world records anymore. In 1934 the first ski lift at the same hill was opened and one year later the first night jumping event under floodlights took place. With the development of the way of jumping and the distances, the ski jump was changed and enlarged over the years. As in 1948 and 1959, when also the smaller hills were built.
In 1972 the inrun tower of the large hill burned down and it took 5 years to reconstruct and modernize the whole facility as K112, K88, and K60.5 by 1977.
During the 1990s and 2000s, Howelsen Hill was a regular site of World Cup and Continental-Cup competitions of Nordic Combined. Furthermore, Steamboat Springs was a US Nordic training site until 2002.
In 2000-2001 the larger hills were re-profiled as K114, K90, and K68. Besides the K68 a new plastic-covered K41 hill was constructed in 2012 and the old winter hill K38 was given up. In 2021, a small plastic-covered K7 hill was added.
