History:

The Purgatory Ski Resort near Durango in the San Juan Mountains was built in 1965. In the 1970's one of the largest ski jumps in the whole state operated there. In 1971, the US championship was organized there, in which Jerry Martin (later the three-time winner of the flying competition on Copper Peak) was victorious with the longest jump of the day of 84 m. Purgatory was also one of the main centers of "Gelande", a discipline popular in Utah and Colorado, consisting of jumping in alpine skiing equipment. Even the Gelande world record was broken there - in 1973 Paul Hitchcock flew 229 feet (69.8 m). Although closed, the ski jump is still clearly visible from U.S. Route 550.
