History:

The Bühlschanze with its wooden inrun tower was built in 1903 on a hill just above today’s "Eidgenossen" restaurant.
In 1930, it was converted for the first time. Locals spent 3500 Swiss Francs on an extension of the take-off, which was cut off later again. "It was just too dangerous, the jumps got way too far. Almost to the flat part", explains contemporary witness Rudy Herrmann in "Südostschweiz". He, as many of the locals, jumped a lot on the ski jump, "and not only with ski jumping skis". One of the main reasons was also the beautiful view on the village: “It felt like as we were flying over Schwanden."
The hill record of 45 meters was set by the (not only inside Switzerland) ski jumping legend Walter Steiner. Still, there were many rumors that locals jumped even longer than the "bird man". But, if that was so, "there was no way" they would have landed that jump, Hermann analyzed.
In 1968, a judges’ tower with a steel fundament was built on the right-hand side of the ski jump. In 1971, the biggest event in history took place: The national Swiss championships in Nordic Combined, where approximately 2000 spectators visited this place.
After more than 80 years of ski jumps, the final jump took place in 1985. Two years later, the judges’ tower was demolished by civil defense. Afterwards, some teenagers, "especially snowboarders" were jumping on the remainings of the ski jump.
Herrmann still dreams about a reactivation of the ski jump, especially because Emely Torazza, a promising young talent, brought ski jumping back to the Graubünden region. A whole rebuild of the Bühlschanze "would be possible, also money-wise. But the lack of snow is a huge problem. If it stays like this, it will not be worth building a ski jump", he said about the plans.
