The Zermatt Ski Club, founded in 1908, first built the Steinmattschanze close to the town in 1921. In 1926, Richard Kay from Manchester donated the construction of a large hill, which was built in Tufteren until 1928. The inaugural competition was held on January 13th, 1929. In the 1930s, international elite competitions often took place on Christmas Day on the Kayschanze. In March 1948, a night jump under floodlights was held for the first time as part of the Gornergrat derby. In 1950, the hill was given up and the night jumping continued from 1951 on the Steinmattschanze.
