History:
Olaf Rye was an officer of Norwegian-Danish military in early 18th century and performed the very first recorded ski jump in history on November 22nd 1808. On the ground of the Lekum farm near the church of Eidsberg he jumped on 15 ells (9.5 meters) in front of a group of soldiers. Since 1864, there is a square and park in Norway's capital Oslo, which was named after him and which also has a tram station.
Major Jens Edvart Hjorth, who watched Rye's jump described it like this: "In an artificial ski jump hand made of snow pile, he stood on the skis, making a strong run and a jump, it led him with the skis 15 alen from the ground."
To celebrate the 200th anniversary of this first World Record, a competition took place in Eidsberg on November 22nd 2008. The participants wore contemporary outfits and the hill was made of snow, just in same fashion as back in the day. But this fact is also the reason why it is not confirmed where exactly the hill was located.
