History:

In 1908 the giant ski jump at Bardonecchia in Piemont was constructed and inaugurated 1909, whereby the Norwegians Harald and Trigwe Smith jumped the longest distances with 43 and 40 m. The jump of Harald Smith even meant a new world record and this provided that the ski jump was named after him, additionally he and Paolo Kind even were the designers of the jump. Still in the same year, the first Italian ski championships took place on this ski jumping hill, too.
With World War I ski jumping business unfortunately ended, in 1930’s the first ski lifts were built and consequently the area improved into an alpine skiing resort. In 2006 the snowboard competitions of XX Olympic Winter Games at Torino were hosted at Bardonecchia.
