In the small town Tambach-Dietharz in Thuringian Forest not far from Oberhof the first ski jumping hill was built in left Tammichgrund in 1925. Rudolf Lesser from Brotterode jumped the winning distance with 35 meters. At that time the ski jumping hill was called Nesselbergschanze by many people.
In 1954 a substantial conversion and enlargement was done and the new K50 jump was finished. With the reconnection of the ski jumping hill it was called after a very active and successful winter sportsman from Tambach-Dietharz in 1930’s, who fell in World War II just as many other talented sportsmen.
In order to provide young ski jumpers, too, in 1955/56 at right Tammichgrund a smaller 30 meter ski jump was built up, which was even covered with plastic mattings in 1959. On both jumps region and districtal championships of all age classes of Erfurt district had been hosted until 1960’s.
After that in the small double-town only cross-country skiing and biathlon were performed with considerable success. In divers national teams of former GDR the sportsmen K.-H. Menz, H. Wiek, M. Yescob and S. Hoos as well as Gabi Heß and Kati Schwaab achieved World and European titles and took part at Olympic Winter Games.
