History:

Temporary ski jumping hills had been set up during winters in Jena in the early 1950s, which attracted crowds of up to 1,000 spectators during competitions.
Finally, in summer 1954 the construction of a permanent 43-meter hill was started at "Hölle" (hell) in Mäder valley. The facility had been planned by Hans Renner, the chairman of the sports facilities committee of GDR and former ski jumper and coach from Zella-Mehlis. Works were carried out through the national reconstruction service (NAW), almost entirely gratuitously through material donations and voluntary labor provided by local small businesses.
However, during the execution of the works plans and the hill profile had been repeatedly changed. The stone-made take-off was moved 7 meters up in order to eventually allow jumps of up to 50 meters. Due to changing plans, a lack of work force and unclear responsibilities the works had never been finished and the chapter "ski jumping" in Jena even ended before it had fully begun.

Die Schanze ist nicht abgerissen, sondern der Schanzenbau wurde nach der Errichtung des Absprungs abgebrochen.
