The ski jump at Grasberg in Poppenhausen at the Wasserkuppe in the Rhön was completed as a small natural hill with a critical point of 17 m in 1955. Already before that had been ski jumping activities on smaller snow hill near Guckai lake. The local and district competitions became highlights of public life over the following years. Numerous spectators came to the hill, where barbeques were held and people drank.
Later the ski jumping hill was enlarged according to latest profiling standards and a new concrete take-off was installed, which can still be seen today. Poppenhausen became a stronghold for ski jumping during these days. Even a four hills tournament was organized in 1987 together with Wüstensachsen, Oberweißenbrunn and Haselbach, however it didn't last for very long. The last ski jumping competition at Poppenhausen took place in winter 1988/89. In the following bad winters no youth training could take place and ski jumping activities at Grasberg ended.
