History:

Already in 1909 wintersports club Gersfeld in Hessian Rhön was founded and between 1914 and 1922 the first 25 meter hill stood at Simmelsberg. This jump was later replaced by Kälberrainschanze, which was again used after World War II and allowed jumps up to 26 meters. Furthermore there was also a ski jumping hill at Schwedenschanze.
With the founding of SKG Gersfeld in 1949-50 a 65 meter hill was constructed at Reesberg. The first trial jumps on the natural hill were up to 56 meters long, but then a 21 m high and 63 m long inrun tower was set up. During the inauguration in February 1951 Horath set up a hill record of 72 meters. Later on several Hessian Championships were organized there and even world-class athletes like Helmut Recknagel or Werner Lesser competed at Reesberg in front of up to 4000 spectators. The ski jump had to be given up in 1960, because it was situated inside Wildflecken military training ground.
Instead, in 1963 Kälberrainschanze was reconstructed and inaugurated in January 1964. Then, Simmelsbergschanze K52 and the Jugendschanze K28 were built up in 1968, where Hessian Championships were organized in the following years as well.
Today there are now more jumps in Gersfeld in the Rhön, the Nordic section of the SKG now concentrates on cross-country and biathlon.

Archiv
