In summer 1953 Hochsteinschanze was constructed by the ski jumping enthusiastic members of the winter sports club of the small town Oberried in Bavarian Forest, situated on 700 m a.s.l. Local farmers donated the area in the forest at Tränk for free. The inauguration of the ski jump, which was named after the 1134 m high mountain situated north of the village, took place on February 14, 1954. The weather was bright and shine, when 800 fascinated spectators came to see a victory of Sepp Kagerbauer from Bodenmais.
In order to allow distances of 30 meters and more, the hill was already enlarged one year later: the new wooden inrun tower had a height of 5.4 m, the critical point was now at 30 meters and a new hill record of 33 meters was set in winter 1955. Another reconstruction of the hill took place in 1971-72 and the record distance improved onto 36 meters. Almost every winter competitions were organized on the hill, usually they were possible until April due to the protected location inside the forest.
Highlights of the ski jumping history of Oberried were the Bavarian district junior and pupils championships in March 1974. Therefore 240 tons of snow had to be transported to the hill from higher altitudes, since temperatures rose up to summerly 23°C. But Hochsteinschanze could still be prepared with the great help of people from Oberried and Unterried and host more than 1000 spectators. Due to the 25th anniversary of the club, WSV has allowed to host the Bayerwald junior championships in 1978 and in 1982 there was a ski jumping competition with many participants, some of the also from Upper-Austria.
The last competition on Hochsteinschanze was held in February 1985. In the following years planned events always had to be cancelled due to bad weather conditions. Finally the inrun tower was dismantled in summer 1990, since it was in danger of collapsing.
