Gurtenschanze to be dismantled
on 2012-06-29
After almost 25 years the very last competition on the plastic covered hills at Gurten in Bern just took place. Soon they will be dismantled and a toboggan run shall be build.
On October 3, 1987 the two junior ski jumping hills K42 and K25 were inaugurated and since the "Gurten Cup" for national and international youngsters has been hosted in the Swiss capital Bern annually in summer. But on the last weekend the very last junior competitions were held at Bern and Jakob Hess from Engelberg performed the final jump.
As almost everywhere in Switzerland, also the "Verein Bernische Trockensprungschanzen" (VBTS) has to fight a lack of young jumpers, recently there were only 2 active athletes. Despite the great success of Simon Ammann ski jumping never gained the popularity in the confederacy as in the neighbouring countries Germany and Austria. "The demand for ski jumping within the urban agglomeration has never been that high during the 25 years of operational period", admits Stefan Sommer, president of VBTS, in Swiss daily "Blick".
So the VBTS would not have been possible to mortise a modernization that was soon to come and also the lack of a lift complicated normal practising routines. Soon the ski jumping facility, which offers a great view onto the city, will be dismantled and within the next 3 years a toboggan run shall be build at the same location.
