Vikersund: SFWC preparations running at full speed

on 2011-10-13

The realization of the necessary conversion works to the "Monsterbakken" at Vikersund and the finishing to the infrastructure for the Skiflying Worlds in February 2012 is progressing.

Since February 11, 2011 and the two world record braking flights of Johan Remen Evensen on 243 and 246.5 meters, Vikersundbakken in Norway has been the world's largest ski flying hill. Therefore the ski hill had been enlarged onto HS 225 (K195) in only 8 months in 2010, but several measures to improve the infrastructure for the up-coming Ski Flying World Championships from February 24 to 26, 2012 could not be realized yet. Furthermore the very flat flying curve, that should make the "Monsterbakken" very safe, turned out to be to selective.

So already in spring this year FIS and the organizers decided to change the flying curve before the SFWC 2012, because during the World Cup in 2011 too many jumpers were forced to land there jumps already on the knoll, while only a few managed to reach distances that had been unknown so far. In order to make to flying curve a bit higher, the take-off was shortened by one meter already in September and its angle lowered from 11.2° to 10.8°. Additionally works on the landing hill from K-Point (195 m) downwards still have to be carried out, so that the slope at Hill Size (225 m) shall be lowered from 32° to 30.5°. This measures shall cause fewer early drops, which are not very attractive for both ski jumpers and spectators, but still make long flights possible.

To improve the infrastructure around the ski jump, which was so far not suitable for a SFWC, already in the past months the works on the media center (IBC) and office building (totally 300 m²) continued and at the moment a 500 meter long jumper's lift is installed. Moreover, a heating room for the athletes with a wing-shaped roof (90 m²) and a ski flying café (150 m²) with terrace (450 m²) will be build. The outrun of the jump gets also shortened by 19 meters and this together with other measures will increase spectator capacity on 25'000.

Neuer Hill Size?

Im Text steht, dass der Hill Size (225m) von 32 auf 30,5 Grad gesenkt wurde.Das ergibt doch dann einen neuen Hill Size, oder?
