Recycling of an inrun tower

on 2004-01-07

Fox River Grove gets a new old inrun tower from Ely: In order to enlarge the existing 60 meter jump Carry Hill, the Norge Ski Club from Illinois makes use of the inrun tower of the ski hill in Ely, Minnesota, since it isn't used there anymore.

The Norge Ski Club of Chicago, located at Fox River Grove in the U.S. in the state of Illinois about 40 miles from Chicago, is the oldest ski club of the USA. It was already founded in 1905 and one year later the first ski jump was set up.

In the past time the ski club already organized a spectacular event in 1954, when a wooden ski jumping hill was set up on the grand stands of Soldier Field at Chicago, originally the home of Chicago Bears in the North-American Football League NFL, and a ski jumping competition was hosted in the metropolis.

Already in one year in 2005 the 100th anniversary of Norge Ski Club, which is very active with the education of young jumpers, is coming up. Before this great annual a big task was ahead of the ski club members, because the decision was made to enlarge the plastic covered 60 meter ski jump at Carry Hill.

Therefore the landing hill of the old jump had to be extended on top an even the old inrun tower became too small. Then the decision was made to deconstruct the inrun tower of the ski jump at Ely near the Canadian border since it hasn’t been used anymore anyway, then transport it to Fox River Grove and mount it upon Carry Hill. A spectacular action that is anything but ordinary.

The steel inrun tower was cut into several parts and had to be put together piece by piece with the support of a crane. Now the tower is complete again, the take-off attached to it, the base of the inrun trail mounted and parts of the stairs are fixed.

Works are moving on every day now, but the new ski jump has to be completed soon, because the annual winter competition for the 99th club anniversary is already coming up on January 18 and then the inauguration of the new 70 meter hill shall be celebrated.
